Looking into buying 5th or 6th gen

Hi. I'm looking at getting a 5th or 6th gen Celica and was wondering what peoples opinions are and any advice you may have about buying them.

First, out of the 2 gens which would you recommend? Obviously the 6th gens are newer and generally have less km but they are also more costly and budget at the moment is an issue. I've heard that aftermarket parts for these are hard to find as well. Is that true or is it just a matter of where to look? And as for models should I grab a GT or GT-S. One issue i know with the GTS is that the body kits i've been looking at are modeled for the GT and the GT-S has wider fenders and would require mods to the kits. Is the difference between a GT and a GT-S that great?

Also, would it be wiser for me to look at an Integra or a Civic? Personally I like the Celica a whole lot better but the aftermarket part availability becomes the issue here. I hate how there are so many integras and civics on the road too.

Anything else you might think would help would be appreciated

Thanks in advance!

I hate how your descision to buy a car depends on ricey aftermarket parts...buy a Honda you'll be much happier. There are no good body kits for the celica. The widebody is a much nicer body shape thean the ST/GT. Check out the information link at the top of this webpage to check the differences between the years/models. If you decide to buy a celica....PLEASE do not put a massive ricey spoiler on it.

Actually i don't like to 'rice' my cars up, but I do like to be able to change the head/tail lights and put a body kit on such as

I actually hate it when people lower their cars to pretty much drag on the ground and I hate giant spoilers. I really don't like civics either. I really like the way the Celica looks. I wish I could grab a 7th gen but they cost way too much for my budget. 6th gens are either at the top of my range or just out of it and 5ths are right in my budget range.

BTW just noticed you are from Burlington. I'm from Hamilton/Waterdown. Small world eh?

But I likes my spaceships!

Would i be wiser to grab a cheaper 5th gen or pony up the funds for a 6th? I'm looking to purchase as more of a project car but within a year when my lease is up it would be my primary.

I honestly don't know what to tell you...

If it were me, i'd take a 5th Gen All-Trac over a 6th Gen GT/GTS anyday...

But, The All-Trac is going to cost alot more than a regular 5th Gen GT/GTS... So that may not be in your budget...

However, I will tell you this... 5th Gen Celica's and body-kits don't mix... I know everyone has their own taste and style and all that stuff... But I can't remember the last time I seen a 5th Gen with a Vader kit (or 95% of the other kits available) get a compliment from another 5th Gen owner... I really don't mean to be a jackass, but these cars just look plan tacky with most of the kits available for it...

(There is however the odd one that is tastefully done, but even then the stock lines are much nicer)

Yeah chances are the alltrac is out of my limit plus i haven't managed to find a single one in my area for sale. So other than the body size differences there is no difference between a stock GT and a stock GTS?

Not really no... The GTS is "77lbs" heavier...

GTS usually came with power seats (better shape than the GT, alot more comfortable)
GTS has a "System 10" soundsystem... (I dunno if they all did, but whatever)

Really not too much of a difference in the two cars... I've never once thought "Damn I wish I had a GTS."

Yeah I was reading the link you posted a bit earlier and they seemed identical. I think if I have a choice i'd try and grab a GT if only for the fact that the body kit I want is designed for it. The GTS requires modification to get it to fit properly. I'm going to take a look at a 1990 hopefully tomorrow in my town thats being sold for cheap. I'm just waiting for the seller to email me back to set up a time to check it out. There are a few others around that I'm going to check out too.

The first and second ones I'm going to check out first. If the white 1990 is in decent shape i might pick that one up for the cheap pricetag. The engine has a lot of km on it but it can always be rebuilt or swapped later. The second one looks like it might be in better shape but its more money. I guess it really just depends on the condition of each. One plus for the second is that i have a friend who owns a car lot who says he can get me other cars from lots at a discounted wholesale price. I don't know how much the discount would be but its worth consideration for sure.

On a side note, for winter do the lights tend to freeze while retracted? My dad was telling me about a car he had a long time ago with pop up lights and how they used to always freeze and that eventually he resorted to disabling the mechanism that allows them to rise while in the extended positon so that they didn't retract and get frozen shut

Scynthe is from Hamilton, ON (according to his profile... Damn city stole my last name)

And... It was quite easy... Removed old wheels, replaced with new wheels and simply tightened the new lugs

LOL @ how obvious of a difference there is in the shade of Red used for the body-kit as opposed to the car itself...

Well I looked at a bunch of them today. I took a drive out to Toronto and hit some dealers and one private seller who had some up for sale but all of them were crap. One had over 400000km on it and was rusting, the others were listed as 5spd when they were actually automatic, one turned out to be a coupe (ew) and the one I was really hoping to turn out good was rusting everywhere badly, which is a shame since it had the lowest km.

Suprisingly the best one i've looked at so far was a 1990 Celica GTS for 1000$. 340000km and he said the engine was rebuilt but hes not sure at what km. It drove nicely though, engine seemed strong and it shifted smoothly. It also had a cold air intake installed and a performance boosting chip thingy (found on ebay) One of the stock rims was damaged so one of the wheels is a black winter rim. Would it be hard to find a stock rim at a wrecker? No rust that I could spot and its recently been painted (rough probably just a primer but looks clean). It was missing the antenna at the back, and for safety needs new brake pads on the rear and a new e-brake cable (atleast). Interior was in OK condition and the AC needs to be fixed. Not the greatest but could be cleaned up and i plan on repainting it anyways. Oh and it has the System 10 sound system in it. Its a GTS though so body kits would need modifying. For 1000$cdn (Asking price) do you think I should jump on it.

Get the 90 if it looks ok, I'd forget about the body kit. There was a 1994 with high mile for sale on Celispeed you might want to check if he still has it, it looked mint.

I took a gamble and checked out an ad that had no picture and was pleasantly suprised. 1992 GTS with only 172000 km on it. No rust anywhere. All it needs is new front tires and a windshield. The guy was firm on his price of 3k but he said he'd grab a new set of tires and throw them in if I took it and a buddy of his works at a place that'll do the windshield for 120. It's missing the front piece that sits above the bumper under the lights and there are some paint chips, but as I said no rust anywhere (i looked hard for some too). I'd plan to repaint it eventually anyways. Interior was the cleanest i've seen too. Just gotta double check a few things and I'm thinking about taking it.

Between 5th and 6th, I personally would choose the 5th gen.... I just love the flip headlight and that is the reason why I choose 5th gen.
. Interior wise, I don't think there would be big difference.... after all, it's celica (even the new one is nothing to be special about).....plus engine wise, I dont think there would be real difference also, unless you get 5th gen ST (not GT ir GT-S)....
The ebay chips basically just crap so just dump it, it wouldn't add any sh1t for sure..... the only way to gain power is if you can get any EMU for this car but considering the price (unless you do motor swap), it would be pointless......
Any bolt-on modfications would basically more for sound so don't expect to gain high whp with changing few parts......

Not all GT-S come with 10 speakers, how do I know? my 1990 GT-2 doesnt have it.....I think it's more an option.....

I keep my celica stock....I'm more into performance than look but different folks have diff taste.......it's my daily driver because it's 'fuel efficient' ..... if you get all-trac or do engine swap, then you have different reason than just for 'fuel efficient'. JMHO.
