Getting ready to change my front struts. Im confused as all the pictured struts i see look like conventional shocks without a spring perch. I've been told that these cars have cartridge struts but when I look at photos of same year and car these look like conventional struts with welded tubes. Does the cartridge slip into these? Pictures are for reference only. I will be buying new. Thank you

The photo below is that from a 1982-1985 Celica Supra. This is the front strut w/o the spring and without the cartridge. At the top is the gland nut. If your struts are factory originals on your 1989 Celica, your front struts would also have this gland nut. If you do, you can purchase the small cartridges and replace your cartridges that are inside this strut tube. If your front struts do not have this hexagon gland nut, then they are not the originals that came with the car when built, so you can't use the cartridges. The bottom attachment is from Toyota EPC showing that your 1989 Celica would have have gland nuts at the top of the strut tubes, allowing cartridge changes.
