Welded steering wheel nut....

Soooo I just bought a 1989 Celica ST, after looking into it I went out and bought a spline disconnect for my steering wheel, and turns out the wheel is welded to the nut that's connected to the "spline"? I'm not sure what it's actually called but point is, I went to take off my steering wheel, meant to be an easy job, andddd its not. Its welded on and I honestly have no clue how to take it off. I have some idea using a grinder of sorts, but I don't want to damage what its connected too. I was wondering if anyone knows how take it off without damaging it?

I'm pretty sure the nut was not welded to the steering wheel frame from the factory. Given it is now, though, the only thing I can think of would be to grind or cut the weld material off to be able to loosen the nut. You do not want to damage the splined shaft. You may damage the steering wheel though, so you should probably secure a replacement steering wheel before attempting to remove yours.
