Okay, my and my step brother are working on a 1987 celica GTS (according to badging). It has a 5 speed set up with the 2.0 3S-GE, or 3S-FE, im not 100% sure which model off hand, but i digress. The transmission has come to a point where shifting is not what the transmission is happy with. Could be parked engine off or driving, and it wont want to go into gear part of the time or binds and gives eesistance.I am thinking it could be the bushing for the connecting rods for the shifter, or the shift forks, any ideas or thoughts are welcome, and thank you for anyone who replies

What is the condition and level of the oil in the transmission? When was the last time the transmission oil was changed?

It might be good lifting the vehicle so someone can safely go under the car while another is trying to shift it. It should be somewhat obvious if any binding is in the transmission or in the shifter cables. Knowing this at least would help you a lot.

didnt think on looking under it to check for binding, will have to do so this weekend, condition of transoil i have 0 idea, safe bet is say it hasnot in who knows how long, i just keep being yelled at when i told my brother hey its going to need work put in when he bought it from me. Im not a transmission expert of any form will need reference catalog for type of oil it supposed to have and if addatives are needed.

If the owner's manual is still with the car, there will be a section at the back, under specifications, which will tell you the kind of oil needed for that particular transmission, and the quantity needed for a complete drain & refill.

Given the transmission model depends on whether your 1987 Celica is a GT or a GT-S, you will need to know which it is. If you have a VIN on it, I can look at up for you. The GT model had the 3S-FE while the GT-S model had the 3S-GE (3S-GELC actually) engine. As such, the manual transmissions used were dependent upon which engine it was built with. So if you have the VIN, I can help you further.

Both engines mentioned have dual overhead cams in them. The 3S-FE has a single cam driven by the timing belt, with the other cam gear driven under the valve cover. The 3S-GELC engine has both cams driven by the timing belt. Both models could have a 5-speed manual transmission, but these are different model transmissions (dependent upon which engine that car has in it). You will find out more come this Sunday.

I derped on that one, i did mean dual overhead cam, but its driven by 1 singular gear in timing cover, being the 3S-FE i can say that for sure, working night shift makes it hard to focus sometimes. so i will say im sorry if i seem a bit all over the place.

So yesterday was a bust due to the storm that past yesterday through georgia as i refused to get into the mud and rain that soaked the drive way that its parked at, was told they just bought slave and master cylinder since that is what they were told by another mechanic... hate throwing parts and guessing issues... so thats hopefully next weekend plans if it doesnt rain...
