Just made my Celica comeback with an '83 GT a few days ago, I had a 2001 GTS a few years back. I'm not the most familiar with cars, but that's the goal for me with this car.

Is anyone familiar with the average mpg this model gets? Mine's feeling really low right now and I'm not sure if there's a problem I need to address or if it's low in general for the '83. I'll need to pay more attention when I hit the gas station next time, but I swear I topped it off 8 gal when I came in at 1/4 tank. But everything I'm reading says its a 16gal capacity.

Anyone with insight on this model care to give me a quick rundown?

I had a few from that generation. Drove an ‘83 GT from 1987-1995, an ‘84 GT from 1995-1996, and an ‘83 GT-S from 1996-2008. All were hatchbacks and had 22R-E engine, 5-speed manual transmission, and 16-gallon fuel tank.

The ‘83 GT was the best of the pack. It had manual windows and steering. Only power assist was brakes and only option was air conditioning. Had about 20k miles when I got it, and 150k when someone ran into it and it was totaled. Was very strong running. Almost every time driving it, the 85-mph speedometer was pegged at least a few times. Mixed driving would get about 25 mpg. Highway would be low to mid 30s. One time I was taking it really easy on a road trip and got 39.

The ‘84 GT was about the same except it had power steering and windows, and a 130-mph speedometer. Don’t recall ever pegging that one. Mixed driving in that was good for around 24 mpg and highway about 30. Might have been a bit lower mpg due to being higher miles; had around 140k when purchased and 160k when someone else ran into and totaled that one. (Sometimes it seemed like I had a target painted on me.)

And finally, the ‘83 GT-S. That one was right at 100k when purchased, and around 270k when I ran out of time to fix all the little things that were failing. It had all the options of the ‘84, plus independent rear suspension, sunroof, fender flares, wider tires, and the Recaro-style front seats. All these items added weight and/or friction (air and road) that cost a bit of mpg. Mixed driving was at 23 mpg and highway was high 20s.

That was all more than what you were asking, but I really enjoyed all my Celicas and wish that I still had at least one of them.
