Cruise Control Not Working

Hello, I have had an issue where my cruise control system does not maintain any speed set. The button will click on and the light comes on, on the dash, it doesn't blink or anything but when I try to either set a speed or accelerate nothing happens. I went through the diagnostic mode by holding the set button while enabling cruise main switch and everything was in spec except I got no readings from the speed sensor. I've looked into this online before and it seems like a common failure is a speed sensor. My Celica has a 2.2 M/T without ABS so it has a vacuum system and from what I have heard the speed sensor is located on the transmission housing. The reason why I am questioning this is because my speedometer is still accurately working. If anyone has any advice or experience with this issue please reply. Thanks!

I found a manual that has diagnosis tips and tricks for cruise control and I will include it in case anyone else is having the same or similar issue and I hope it helps.

Have you checked for a vacuum leak or blockage. I had a similar situation this summer when I put on new vacuum lines. The line to the control unit on the pass side by the fender got pinched. It's about the longest vacuum line on the entire engine that leads from the manifold. Does a crazy route to get there.
Thanks for responding, I just looked and I can only seem to find one vacuum hose and im not sure if its the one your talking about, it goes straight from the EFI housing to the vacuum actuator, I was looking everywhere for another hose just to make sure but I only found power steering lines and I think a coolant hose. That one vacuum hose seems in ok conditions, no cracks or dry rot. I didn't feel any air leaking out on either of the ends. And the vacuum hose going from the valve cover to the EFI housing also is good, no cracks and I can't feel any air leaking out.

Maybe there was a different route used in other years or something for the cruise control because my line doesn't really go near the fender unless someone decided to mess with it in my car. I can confirm though, the cruise control worked about 3 or so months ago, it just quit out of no where.
2 possible areas:

Vacuum - per Sea-J, check hoses and vacuum canister located on passenger side. You'll need a vacuum tool (small hand pump) to verify hoses etc are fine

Speed sensor , it's mounted on top of the tranny, roughly beneath the throttle. It has a small speedometer cable inside it (to which the regular speedometer is attached:. There is a "pickup coil" inside that spends actual wheel speed to the ecu. If you went thru diagnostics and saw no speed, then it's failed or the pigtail writing to it has shorted.

I'll snap some pics today for more clarity and get back later.
Did you get your cruise working? I see you have the manual. When you did the diagnostic port jumpering, what code(s) did you get from your flashing cruise control light? You didn't say what you had for codes. I've worked on several of these cruise control items on 5th Gen Celicas, so I'd like to help (just found your post now). Let me know if you have resolved the issue or could still use some help.

Hi, sorry I haven't checked back in a while. I am pretty sure the issue is just the speed sensor on the transmission, you can test it using the cruise control switch and putting it in a diagnostics mode, it wasn't reading anything from the sensor. Now my struggle is to find the sensor, which I have had no luck doing.
You were getting code 21 then?

Besides the speed sensor itself, a wiring fault between the speed sensor and the cruise control module could also be the cause of not getting the speed sensor input. It isn't fun testing wiring, but just saying it could be. If the transmission was ever worked on or removed (for clutch replacements, for example), the wiring could have been damaged. Just a thought.
Hi again, I actaully never used any jumper wires to test it like that, I was able to just use the cruise control switch and light in the dash to diagnosis it for me. I think to enter the diagnosis mode it was by holding the set position on the lever as well as turning on the cruise control. According to the manual once in this mode, once you drive over 25mph the cruise light should rapidly flash if it is reading the speed sensor properly, yet mine never flashed even when driving highway speeds. I was lucky and bought this car with 29k miles two years ago, with the service paperwork and it has had no transmission or engine work ever done. A broken wire could be it definitely, so you're right, I should test the wires. I will try to check their resistance or something within this week. Thanks for the help.
What did you get in step 4 for results then? What was the cruise control lamp doing in both driving conditions in step 4?
The light remained on all the time, below and above 25mph
I would still suggest you do the process using the jumper wire. You will probably get what you are expecting. But if there is a slight chance it is something else, you will be glad you didn't pursue the speed sensor solution.
