Default 1995, replacing air intake hose

New member here so I am unable to post a pic until I have a higher post count in the forums.
I have a split in the hose between the air filter and the carburettor. 60mm dia hose about 300mm long, but the original hose has a black box haflway along connected to the bottom of the hose. Looks like some type or water catcher or similar. Any idea what it actually is and do i need it? I was just going to replace it with a piece of hose and not worry about putting that part back on.

That box is a noise canceling box. It is used for audible noise but can also dampen pressure waves in the intake tube that can cause loss of air flow. You probably don't need it.

I have a 1995 1.8L and my tube was torn. I was able to purchase a new one from an online Toyota dealership a few years ago. It wasn't very expensive and I was surprised that it was still available. Get the part number from your local toyota dealership. If they can't get the part, do google searches for the part number and search ebay. You might be able to also find a good used part from junk yards.
