the first letter in the chasis code usually tells you what engine family the car uses, ie AW11(MR2) and AEX(X)X (corolla/trueno/levin), uses A engine. SW20 (MR2) uses S family of engine, JZA80 (supra) uses JZ engine, ST184 (celica GT/GTS), also uses S family of engine. the letter after the engine family is the chasis the car uses, W,E , A, T respectively.
most of toyota and lexus engines are just recycled which seems to be the trend these days, like the is300 using a 2JZ-GE found in a non turbo supra. M family engines are found in the celica supra, 3rd gen supra and cressida. the chasis code that give the family usually means that engines from the same family are interchangeable. for example, a celica supra that has a 5M-GE can be fitted with a 7M-G(T)E with very little modification and is essentially a drop in and bolt on. likewise, 3sgte can be fitted into a celica having a 5sfe.
The engine found in the first generation MR2 was adopted from the corolla GTS, the 4AGE. the mr2 was later fitted with a supercharged engine found from the levin AE92 and then the mk1 mr2 was discontinued at 1988 and sold the last super charged models for 1989, and was the beginning of the SW20 and SW21. after the first generation mr2, the 2nd and 3rd generation of the mr2 used the engines found in the celica from the S and ZZ family. there was even a mk1 that was fitted with a 1.5L tercel engine i believe, but that was found only in japan
the same 3S engine can be found in rav4s. another way to pseudo-identify an engine in a car is by their displacements. this method is "usually" correct for the same generation of car across different cars from toyota. if it's not the correct engine, at least it's a good guess to what the engine is in the car for similar years. for example, a 1988 toyota camry has a 3S-FE and the 1988 celica GT had a 3S-FE both with 2000cc displacement. a 2800cc displacement from a 5M-GE from a 1984 celica supra can be found in a 1984 cressida (MX73) with a 2800cc 5M-GE. the later generation of the supra from 1986-1992 had a 7m-g(t)e and the cressida 1989-1992 at the 7M-GE, both with 3000cc.
