Hey there, So I just bought an 2000 GST yesterday. Everything's so good so far! Just have to master this 6spd
One of a the problems I instantly noticed is that there is a higher frequency "whine" that varies with the speed of the engine. If I turn the radio off if completely disappears. The guy who owned the car before me upgraded all the speakers inside and hooked it to an aftermarket amp under the seat (4 channel I'm assuming). It sounds pretty good when the car is off, but as soon as you turn it on it's obnoxiously whiney... Now I'm assuming when he installed the aftermarket sony deck he just didn't ground it well enough. Is this correct? Thanks! |

First try re-grounding both the amp and headunit, make sure your power and signal wires are on opposite sides of the car.
If that doesnt work you could also try getting twisted rca's (actually removed the noise i was having, maybe had a faulty rca from prior car that i used) Here is a flowchart from crutchfield to help you diagnose the problem - How To Diagnose and Suppress Noise |

Re ground the radio to the chassy if anything. Take wire and rap it around your RCA terminals in like a figure 8 when they are connected then ground that wire to ground. That will take the wine away. It's most likely the amp or radio is not grounded well which sends that signal through the RCA wires back to the radio. Grounding the RCA cables will fix that if its to much Hassal grounding the radio or amp better.
