New member seeks help with headlights

Hi, I have a 2003 1.8 VVTi in the UK. I have a headlight problem if anyone can help. Using the indicator stalk the sidelights work OK. When I select dipped headlights they come on OK, but also both main beams come on very dim. At the same time the blue dashboard main beam indicator comes on very dim. If I select main beam, the left hand main beam lights Ok, but the right hand (which was on dim with the dipped headlights) now goes out. Also the blue dashboard main beam indicator goes out, when now I expect it to be on. If I have all lights switched off and ''flash'' the main beams, they both come on OK, but no blue dashboard indication. Any guidance gratefully received!
