Default engine squirrel noises

A fast squeaky noise that gets faster as the revs increase. Happens every now and than. Any idea what it is, I have a 2000 GTS.

Default Belt tensioner.

Check tension on the belt. At the spot in the middle of the longest straight run on top, when press by hand, the belt should not move more than 1/4 inch.

There is no belt tension adjustment in the 2ZZ engine. Belt tension is fixed and supplied by a spring-loaded strut near the fire wall.

If belt is loose, the belt tensioner strut that puts a load on the belt may be weak, corroded or binded. Spray WD-40 on all move mechanism around the tensioner strut. If everything is working properly but belt tension is still low, the strut may need to be replaced.

The whining may also be caused by worn pulleys at the water pump, power steering or A/C. Spray lubricants into those pulleys one by one to find out which one causes the whining.

Good luck.

captain solo seems to have it all figured out but i say check the serpentine belt. it may be old and need to be replaced. it should be on the left side of the engine but then again i've only noticed the squicking from old serpentine belts when the car is just idling. a new belt is only $20 too.

I would say take it to a shop with new belt in hand and have it changed...takes like 15 minutes and costs about 20 for the install (or do it yourself) worst case scenario is you just spent up to 40 dollars , find out that its NOT the belt (but now its new) and can keep going on other things that it could be.

I'm sorry to say this, but you have yota squirrels nesting in your engine.
This is an intervention and it saddens me to say this, but Toyota simply forgot to put enough squirrel power in your top end.
