I've been on these forums since 2008, I dont really post, just read and browse the forums from time to time. My celica recently broke down with an engine problem, the shop I took it to said the engine is unfixable, apparently the piston arm broke off and went through the motor. Does anyone know of a good shop I could take it to? How much am I looking at to get the engine replaced?

If you truly threw a rod through your block... You will have to find a new engine, unless you want to replace just the block, but there are so many factors that can go wrong with that...
If there is no clear hole that was blasted through your block. I would suggest taking off the oil pan, and see if you can move any of the pistons around. Or if you can see anything that is really wrong with the car. It's a simple task to do, and it doesn't take long at all to do. It just depends on the problem. My car engine died a few years ago, I had a huge knocking in the lower part of my engine, so I turned it off before anything exploded in my engine... I took it to Toyota and they claimed that I threw a rod... Then, one of the mechanics offered to buy the car off me for cheap. That set off a flag in my brain... I told him no, and I decided to follow just what I told you... I took off the oil pan, and as it turns out, I didn't throw a rod, I just spun a bearing on one of my connecting rods... I decided to just rebuild my entire engine. Now I have an engine that is better than ever, and I took some knowledge with me. ![]() You can follow my advice, or... Just buy another engine. JASPER Engines & Transmissions: Remanufactured engine: diesel, marine, import have re-manufactured engines for about $4,000.00. If you take this route, and do it yourself. You might save another 3-4k on work-hours that a professional would do. There is also Toyota Celica Manuals for 00-05 available online for free download. That's all I did and I still have a strong engine running. I had no prior experience on building engines or anything on a car, and trust me... I'm not super smart either. XD If you have any questions, PM me, I really don't mind helping you. I know all about the Celica engine. The 1ZZFE anyway. But an Inline 4 is an Inline 4.Good luck! - Josh

Hello. I know this is a really old thread, and I don't have the car yet, but I'm going to pick up (yes, pick up--it's really cheap) a 2000 GT that sounds like what was described here in response. The car is a manual, and it was returned from a test drive with a bad knocking sound coming from the bottom of the engine, so it was relisted on Craigslist for $700. He's not sure if it's the engine or a throwout bearing, and since it's over an hour away I haven't been able to look at it myself. He said there's a nearby engine for $200.
Is this reasonable? Is it worth it? I've kind of already committed to buy the car, so I guess it's a moot point, but would it be worth swapping the motor or should I go for a rebuild? Otherwise the car seems to be in great shape. To answer the why, I don't know. After months and possibly years of burning my eyes out on Craigslist it just grabbed me and I went for it. I'm also open to swapping in engines other than factory stock for more power or less cost and such, if that's an option. Thanks --Josiah Last edited by josiah1; 02-17-2013 at 09:12 AM. |

I know this is an old post but, if you still have the body for the Celica I would like to negotiate a sale for it. I have a 2003 celica that was totaled beyond repair. Yet the motor still fires up easily.
