Default intake/exhaust expectations

I'm looking for advice on intake and exhaust on my 5sfe 91 GT. I'm generally rebuilding it, and I know the exhaust is rough with rust (the headers look particularly bad). I'm not expecting to turn it into a beast of a car, but I may end up replacing headers and back for the sake of restoration. If there is some horsepower to be gleaned there, I may go for performance parts instead of stock.

I've been trolling eBay and generally pricing parts, so I'm trying to decide if it's worth it. I see 'performance ' headers going between $200-250,and I have a welding shop that will set me up with 2.25" pipe back and a high flow cat for about $300.

Any notion what horsepower gains that would net me from am otherwise stock GT? I probably also would do an intake.

Would these mods then necessitate an ecu tuning too?

Thanks for any advice offered

Im still looking for my exhaust system for my 92 ST, but they say you gain "15 hp" for each.. Idk how true that is tho... No your ecu wont need tuned.. From personal experience i wouldnt buy exhaust from ebay, i used to play around hondas and bought one for 200 complete.. The headers turn black/burnt color. And always came lose connecting to down pipe, and after the cat.

Well, buying from eBay, but name brand, like obx. Or... actually does anyone have other opinions? I've heard at least one person say that headers won't make a difference without boring out my exhaust ports from the engine.

I know 'your mileage may vary', but what experiences with this sort of work do folks have?

a full exhaust will give you more power but not an incredible amount. its up to you if you want to spend that kind of money for a little more hp.

They open up the power band so the engine doesn't strain as much under normal operation.

I have an Short Ram Air Intake for my 90 GT and I got it from eBay. They make it for all generations and it works really nice in my car. I bought it for $29 from a racing company that's top rated seller so it actually works and it makes my car sound and perform better. You will just want to get a high performance mass airflow sensor which is what I'm working on right now. Short ram makes it louder and it's 3" diameter.

5th gens have MAP (manifold absolute pressure), not MAF/MAS (Mass Air Flow).
