Default 1990 st mods?

I just bought my dads 1990 st. It's my first car. I plan on doing some autocross, and have a few mods in mind to make my car a little more fun. First is a short throw shifter. I'm in the less than $200 market. Recommendations? How hard are they to install? Next is exhaust. My car has an exhaust leak, and sounds like crap. What's a good catback to buy? I don't want a fart can.

OBX makes a cat-back for the ST, short shifter shouldn't be too hard to install, its just a few screws. You may also want to lower the car a bit 1.5-2" to handle better. A cheap mod is to get a strut bar from a GT or GT-S. Lose some weight, take out the spare tire and jack. Congrats on getting a the car, I have a ST too.

i believe i have saw on the forums that you can use a 7th gen stock shifter its shorter than the 5th gen and would be cheaper than any aftermarket one if you can find one. i have a thrush turbo muffler on my ST. but my flex pipe leaks like a boss so im not 100% on the sound of it.

I might go with the stock manifold back exhaust, with a more aggressive muffler.

yes you can mod a 7th gen short shifter for a 5th gen. just go to the faq on the 5thgen part of the forum. i listed it there. and like mrlieu said you can get the obx catback on ebay. or just buy an aftermarket muffler. and if you plan on autox go for some suspension parts. poly bushings and coilovers or springs

What about steering wheels? I want something smaller. And. I can't really lower my car because I live on a very potholed road. But bushings are on the list too. But speaking of the suspension, I have a knocking sound coming from one of the wheels when I turn. Any common problems this might be? I'll do more listening tomorrow.

Oh and with that shifter, is a stock 7th gen shifter noticeably shorter than the 5th?
