3S-GTE Tranny. Need a Toyota gurus advice!

Im new to the toyota tuning world and Have searched High and low on forums now for 2 days... I have a 1992 Celica GT4, the last owner had it picked up by a tow truck driver who removed the drive shaft for towing. Along this trip, supposedly all the trans oil leaked out. He got it back on the road after the fix and reconnecting the drive shaft, and while driving he heard a "BANG". The engine shut down and the gear stick is stuck in 3rd. So, my questions are:

1) With the drive shaft removed, will tranny oil leak from the tranny? or just the PTO, or center diff?

2) I cant find a tranny anywhere in Alberta, BUT, I have found a 3S-GTE AWD trans from a 94. Will this tranny work with my era of 3s? And the pictures of it look like theres no PTO or Center diff attached to the new one, so Im going to have to use the one from my car and I need to know if this is going to work before I fork out the money. Help Is greatly Appreciated!
