Heat works only on high , once I hear the thump sound - Toyota Celicas

Hi there, I know similar posts were posted but I wanted to be sure before diving in. The heater only works when I start half way up (vertically) and then swiftly move it down all the hottest setting. Once you hear a "thump" sound it immediately blasts hot air.

Everything else is working fine.

What should be the first thing to check out or replace? Several items were mentioned in several similar posts, but I just wanted to be sure since I don't have a garage and its nice and chilly here in Rhode Island.
