Default Tail light problem

Hello everyone,

I know this is my first thread on the forum but I'm really in need of some advice.

I noticed a couple of weeks ago that the lights on symbol which is shown on the dash was no longer lighting up. I thought nothing of it but upon driving a couple of days ago I found myself getting flashed by a lot of drivers. Turns out my tail lights are completely out, though the break lights work. I have also noticed that my side lights no longer work, but the headlights do.

I took it to the mechanic today who got an electrician in, who is uncertain of what the problem is. Has asked to have the car for 2 days to pull it to bits, which I hate the idea of.

Any advice on what could be done would be greatly appreciated and hopefully I can avoid seeing my car in pieces.

Thanks

check your fuses, relays, and bulbs, make sure they are all good. Most likely I would say its your fusees, there's 2 fuse boxes in the engine bay, one in the drivers kick panel and one in the passenger kick panel. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask more questions.

Hey mrlieu, thank you for your response.
Unfortunately I don't know an awful lot about cars, especially when it comes to the electronics. I'm hoping its all going to boil down to the problem being fuses.

So I'll check to see the fuses aren't blown, then make sure all the bulbs are in place with good connection and finally have a look at the relays. Which relays should I be looking at exactly?

Headlight relay, taillight, pretty much anything that has to do with lighting.
